ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

The New Frontiers in Cosmology (also known as Cosmology under totality) conference, will be held in A Coruña, Spain, from August 10th to 14th, 2026, coinciding with the total solar eclipse happening on August 12th. This conference is jointly supported by the Universidade da Coruña, the Simons Foundation, and the Berkeley Center for Cosmological Physics.

Rationale. We live in the golden age of data-driven cosmology, with vast amounts of data already or soon pouring in from experiments such as DESI, Euclid, Rubin, Roman, SO, SPO, QUIJOTE, HERA, SKA, eRosita, Gaia and many more. Moreover, recent experimental results hint at a potential breakdown of the standard cosmological model.

In several areas, the sheer volume of data means that it is theoretical and observational systematics, rather than the statistical precision of measurements, that limit our ability to advance our understanding of the fundamental properties of the Universe. Many strive to capitalize on the AI revolution to overcome this limitation, along with increasingly sophisticated galaxy evolution models, while others have pushed more analytic approaches such as perturbation theory to new reaches.

This conference seeks to unite the community in examining these advancements, fostering collaboration to shape a clear path toward discovery in cosmology. We aim to highlight the current limitations of standard analyses and explore how innovative techniques and interdisciplinary approaches, e.g. work from machine learning and galaxy formation, can drive the field forward.

Experience a historic solar eclipse. Solar eclipses have played a key role in the development of Physics and Astronomy. During our gathering, we will enjoy a historic total eclipse of the sun, which should be visible from the conference location (we also have contingency plans in case it is cloudy). In parallel to the scientific program, we will have a rich science outreach program in collaboration with local institutions.

Location: the conference venue is in the old quarter of the historic city of A Coruña, Spain. Here you will get to experience Galicia’s culture and renowned gastronomy. The city boasts a bustling street life, beautiful beaches with the longest seaside promenade in Europe, and a mild climate. The city is accesible via its international airport and high-speed rail connection.

NEWS

The solar eclipse of 2026

On August 12, 2026, the moon will completely cover the sun as seen from several Spanish cities, Iceland and Greenland, for about two minutes. This event will mark the first time since 1912 that the Iberian Peninsula has observed a total solar eclipse. Astronomers and amateurs will be able to briefly observe the solar corona, the tenuous outer atmosphere that is only visible during the phase of totality.
